Demerol 100 Mg. Meperidine is a pain reliever that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is similar to morphine and belongs to the class of drugs known as opioid analgesics. It changes how your body feels and responds to pain by acting on the brain.

Meperidine should not be used to treat chronic or long-term pain. It should only be used to treat severe pain that occurs suddenly. Also see the Precautions section. Because of the increased risk of serious side effects, this drug is not recommended for use in newborns. For more information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Demerol 100 Mg Tablet Administration

Before you begin taking meperidine, and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If you have any concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication orally as your doctor has prescribed, typically every 3 to 4 hours. You can take this medication with or without food. If you have nausea, taking this medication with food may help. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist about alternative methods of nausea relief (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).

If you are taking this medication in liquid form, carefully measure the dose with a special measuring device/spoon. If you use a regular spoon, you may not get the correct dose. Make certain that the dose of meperidine liquid in milligrams (mg) is not confused with the dose in milliliters (mL).

Inquire with your pharmacist or doctor about the proper way to measure your dose. Mix one-half glass of water (4 ounces/120 milliliters) with your dose and drink right away. Preparing your dose with water before taking it will keep your mouth from becoming numb.

Your medical condition and how well you respond to treatment will determine the dosage. Do not increase your dose or use this medication more frequently or for a longer period of time than prescribed, as this may increase your risk of side effects. When instructed, discontinue the medication.

Pain medications work best when taken as soon as the first signs of pain appear. If you wait until the pain has become unbearable, the medication may not be as effective.

Stopping this medication abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms, especially if you have been taking it for a long time or in high doses. To avoid withdrawal, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. Notify your doctor or pharmacist right away if you experience any withdrawal symptoms such as

  • restlessness,
  • mental/mood changes (including anxiety, difficulty sleeping, or suicidal thoughts),
  • watering eyes,
  • runny nose,
  • nausea,
  • diarrhea,
  • sweating,
  • muscle aches,
  • or sudden behavioral changes.

This medication may not work as well if used for an extended period of time. If this medication stops working properly, consult your doctor.

Despite the fact that it benefits many people, this medication can sometimes lead to addiction. If you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse or addiction to drugs/alcohol), your risk may be increased. To reduce the risk of addiction, take this medication exactly as directed. For more information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Inform your doctor if your pain does not improve or worsens.

Meperidine is usually only used for a short period of time. Repeated or high doses may cause drug levels in the body to rise, resulting in serious side effects such as seizures and shaking. If this medication is used for conditions that require long-term or high-dosage treatment (such as sickle cell anemia, burns, or cancer), extreme caution is advised. For more information, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. You may become dizzy or drowsy if you consume alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that requires alertness until you are sure you can do it safely. Consume no alcoholic beverages. If you use marijuana (cannabis), consult your doctor.

Inform your doctor or dentist about all of the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) before having surgery.

This medication’s side effects, particularly confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and slow/shallow breathing, may be more severe in older adults.

Children may be more sensitive to the drug’s side effects, particularly severe drowsiness and slow/shallow breathing.

This medication should be used only when clearly necessary during pregnancy. It could be harmful to an unborn child. Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits. (Also see the Warning section.)

Demerol Drug Interactions

Drug interactions can alter the way your medications work or put you at risk for serious side effects. This document does not include every possible drug interaction. Maintain a list of all the products you use (including prescription and nonprescription drugs, as well as herbal supplements) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.

Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medications without first consulting your doctor.

Certain pain medications (mixed opioid agonist-antagonists such as butorphanol, nalbuphine, pentazocine), naltrexone, and samidorphan may interact with this drug.

Taking this medication with MAO inhibitors may result in a serious (possibly fatal) drug interaction. During treatment with this medication, do not take MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine). Most MAO inhibitors should also be avoided for two weeks before starting this medication. Consult your doctor about when to begin or stop taking this medication.

If this medication is combined with other medications that cause drowsiness or breathing problems, the risk of serious side effects (such as slow/shallow breathing or severe drowsiness/dizziness) is increased.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications, including opioid pain relievers (codeine, hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana (cannabis), sleep or anxiety medications (alprazolam, lorazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants (carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines (cetirizine, diphenhydramine).

Check the labels of all your medications (such as allergy or cough-and-cold remedies) because they may contain drowsy ingredients. Inquire with your pharmacist about how to use those products safely.

If you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin, your risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity increases. Examples include MDMA/”ecstasy,” St. John’s wort, and certain antidepressants (including SSRIs like fluoxetine/paroxetine and SNRIs like duloxetine/venlafaxine). When you begin or increase the dose of these drugs, the risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity may increase.

Other medications may interfere with the removal of meperidine from your body, affecting how well it works. Among these are azole antifungals (such as ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), mifepristone, rifamycins (such as rifabutin), ritonavir, and seizure medications (such as carbamazepine and phenytoin).

This medication may cause false test results in certain laboratory tests (including amylase/lipase tests). Make certain that laboratory personnel and all of your doctors are aware that you are taking this medication.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and is experiencing serious symptoms such as passing out or difficulty breathing, administer naloxone if it is available, and then call 911. Call a poison control center right away if the person is awake and has no symptoms.

Residents in the United States can contact their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Residents of Canada can contact a provincial poison control center. Overdoes can cause slow/shallow breathing, severe drowsiness, and coma.
